Our Maths Curriculum
At Hemsby Primary School, we use Power Maths as a basis for our Maths lessons.
This is an exciting class mastery approach, which has been recommended by the DfE, that works for every child. It is based upon the concrete, pictorial and abstract approach.
Every lesson is divided into sections that involve plenty of discovery, sharing, collaboration, practice and reflection. Children are encouraged to solve problems through the use of concrete resources, pictorial representations and abstract thinking.
As a school with mixed-age classes, we follow our mixed age long term plans. Our teaching includes a combination of whole class and smaller group teaching to ensure all children, regardless of their ability within the class, are taught the skills and knowledge needed to excel.
Mental agility and fluency with multiplication tables are key to so many areas of Mathematics. For this reason, we provide a Times Tables Rockstar account for all children in Years 3-6, and our Year 2 pupils after the relevant units (Unit 7 – Spring) have been delivered. Times Tables Rockstars is used to set homework in Years 3-6. Each week we also celebrate the children who have been accessing Times Tables Rockstars the most in our Head of School Newsletter. This focus on participation rather than achievement means all are encouraged to participate, regardless of age or ability.
As a school we have recently purchased PiXL membership, which we will be using to assess our children’s learning in Mathematics and to identify pupils who require further input via therapies (interventions) and topics which require whole class input.
